Abstract:
This is an ArcGIS Server Image Service that provides a three-band false color infrared image of the 2005/2006 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) orthorectified digital aerial photos of Montana.

Services available include: ArcGIS Server Image services, Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) web coverage services (WCS), and OGC web map services (WMS). The image and web coverage services provide users direct access to the native GeoTIFF files and pixel data for geoprocessing and image analysis. The original GeoTIFF files are available by request from the State Library.

The 1 meter ground sample distance ortho images were rectified to a horizontal accuracy of within /- 5 meters of reference digital ortho quarter quads (DOQQs) from the National Digital Ortho Program (NDOP).

This service is based on 3,977 false color infrared (IR) digital orthorectified photo images of Montana. Each image covers an area of 100 square kilometers (39 square miles) and is approximately 286 megabytes in size. The majority of images were acquired in summer 2005 and the remainder were acquired during summer 2006. The 2006 imagery roughly covers the following counties: Sheridan, Roosevelt, Richland, Dawson, Wibaux, Gallatin, Park, Sweet Grass, Prairie, Custer, Daniels, Fallon, Powder River, Carter, and Broadwater. There is also 2006 data in parts of Rosebud, Big Horn, Carbon, Madison, Meahger, Lewis and Clark, Judith Basin, Valley, McCone and Wheatland Counties.

The 2005 aerial photos were collected coincidently with the natural color NAIP images acquired by the Farm Services Agency in support of planning and delivery of USDA programs.

A shapefile showing the extent of each image file and the file names is available at https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/MSDI/Imagery/2005_NAIP/Color_IR_2005_Index.zip. This layer also contains a year field to show which images contain 2005 vs 2006 data. Dates of the 2006 images are not known.

The image dates for 2005 imagery are given in a shapefile at https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Data/Spatial/MSDI/Imagery/2005_NAIP/naip_2005_color_dates.zip.

Please see http://geoinfo.msl.mt.gov/data/Aerial_Photos/NAIP_2005 for more information on NAIP 2005 and infrared 2006 data from the State Library.

Data Quality Information:
Completeness report:
There are small areas along the U.S.-Canada border that are not contained in this dataset.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Accuracy is compliant with FSA Digital Orthophoto Specifications. This accuracy standard for the 1-meter orthorectified images requires that 90% of all well-defined points tested must fall within five (5) meters of the same location identified on Government furnished baseline orthophoto control imagery.

Process step:
Imagery was flown with Leica ADS40 digital sensors to capture 0.9m raw data. Raw data is then downloaded using Leica GPro software into 12 bit TIFF format. The raw TIFF imagery is then georeferenced and reprojected using GPS/INS 200Hz exterior orientation information (x/y/z/o/p/k) to allow stereo viewable imagery. This stereo viewable imagery is processed with the GPro/LPS automatic point matching algorithm to determine common match points every 2000 pixels across the imagery strip and 333 pixels along strip. This pattern includes dual rows of line ties to the adjacent line of imagery. The resulting point data is imported in Leica ORIMA and used to perform a full bundle adjustment of the imagery point data. Any blunders are removed, and weak areas are manually supplemented to ensure good coverage of points. Once the point data is cleaned and point coverage is acceptable vertical control points from the prior generation MDOQQ's are introduced in the corners and center of the block being adjusted. This control is used to perform any datum shift (x/y/z and rotation) to ensure the new adjusted imagery fits the existing MDOQQ reference imagery. The output from this bundle adjustment process is revised exterior orientation data for the sensor with any GPS/INS, datum, and sensor calibration errors modeled and compensated for. Using this revised EO data orthorectified image strips are created using the USGS DEM. The 10m DEM is used where available and 30m DEM is used elsewhere. The orthorectified strips are overlaid over the existing MDOQQ compressed files to ensure accuracy is met by a visual inspection and manually measuring features. Once the accuracy of the orthorectified image strips are validated the strips are processed with a NWG proprietary dodging package that compensates for the bi-directional reflectance function that is caused by the sun's position relative to the image area. This compensated imagery is then imported into Inpho's OrthoVista 4.0 package which is used for the final radiometric balance, mosaic, and tile creation. These final tiles have no buffer and are inspected to ensure all tiles are present and the radiometric quality of the area looks good.
